Green Screen

Green Screen

Green Screen

I used to have my PC blue screen me often.  But I haven’t had that happen in a long time.

Have you ever had your TV “green screen” you?  I hadn’t, until last night.

We tried to watch a DVR recorded program about China.  Suddenly our TV screen went totally green.  We tried another recorded program; it was Green also.  Just a blank screen colored green.

So we tried a normal channel and it was green also.   We changed to other channels and they were all green too.

Was it our TV?  We changed it to get the signal straight from cable, skipping the cable box and the TV worked fine.  Whew!

Back to using the cable box and still everything was green.  Then in changing channels, I once saw a normal screen for a split second.  So it’s not the cabling only delivering green to the TV.

Time out.  We called Comcast. They reset the DVR and things started working again.  Comcast tech said that sometimes the DVR gets mixed up when you are recording or watching HDTV and you try to do the opposite with an analog station at the same time.  Live and learn.  I’m not sure we did that.  But not sure we didn’t either.

Have you ever had your TV “green screen” you?

Why am I here?

Interesting

Interesting

The reality is that I’ve been busy with other things and haven’t thought about updating my blog. I’ve been busy enjoying beautiful fall weather and almost daily bike rides. With Marilyn taking off to Utah to help out with grandchild #2 who arrived on Sept 6, there came a period where I was home alone and actually in Colorado alone as far as family is concerned. But she has returned and I survived. I did run across one thing that I found to be interesting lately – an ad on shopping.yahoo.com.

I’m attending a friend’s funeral tomorrow.  Sure glad I know why I’m here and what happens after death.   Being a Boomer means I probably won’t live more than another 50-60 years max.  I’d better get busy and keep myself in shape to enjoy all those years.

Fly the Flag…

United States Flag

United States Flag

GET YOUR FLAG READY!

Please consider joining in this FLY THE FLAG campaign.

THE PROGRAM:
On Thursday, September 11th, 2008, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States.  Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag
on this seventh anniversary of one our country’s worst tragedies. We do this honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who
today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn’t take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.

Action Plan:
(1) Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you.

(2) Fly an American flag of any size on 9/11. Honestly, we Americans should fly the flag year-round, but at least make it a priority on this day.

Thank you for your participation. God Bless You and God Bless America !

Done, Finished, Complete!

100 Quilts - #98

100 Quilts - #98

Today, we had our final Quilting marathon.  We finished the last 10 of the 100.  Our marathon was scheduled from 8 am to 2 pm, but were were finished by 1:00 and had everything cleaned up and we left by 1:30.  We had 10-12 members who really worked hard throughout the project, taking quilts to their homes to work on.  Overall, we had 97 members each contribute some amount of time.  Over the 2 1/2 months of this project, I spent about 25 hours total between cleaning up and doing tying.  My fingers are a bit sore and numb, but I’m sure they’ll recover.

Change…

Years ago, there was a charismatic and eloquent young leader who decided his Nation needed a change and that he was the one to implement it. The people were receptive and ready for a change.

He spoke passionately when denouncing the existing system and the media loved him.

Nobody questioned what he believed in or whom his friends were. He promised to help the poor and bring free medical care and education to all. He promised to bring justice and equality. He said: I am for hope and change and I will bring you both.

Nobody bothered to ask about the true nature of the change he wanted.  But he brought the change and when everyone was finally equal, they were equally poor, hungry and miserable. Their free education was worthless. When the change was fully implemented, the country had been reduced to a Third World status. More than a million people fled in small boats and rafts. The charismatic, eloquent young leader who made the promises: Fidel Castro; the nation: Cuba.

Ouch!

Last week I went to see dentist about pain in my upper left teeth that started last Sunday.  It came when I ate or put pressure on them. He asked me if it was sensitive to heat or cold and I said “No”. He then took an x-ray, poked around, and finally told me that it was probably sinus related.  The dentist’s orders:  go home and take care of your sinuses.  I had had some runny nose issues over the weekend in Grand Lake.  So that evening when I ate dinner – hot food caused extreme pain, but swishing cool water over the teeth immediately relieved the pain.  So much for not being sensitive to heat or cold.  However, the pain in the teeth went away the next day.  There has been tenderness in the sinus area just above the teeth for the past few days.  It is finally going away.  I guess it was sinus related.   Sorry, Number 4, no photo today.

Dig This

Van Replacement

Van Replacement

Who needs a mini-van with a dis-functional air conditioner? Might as well have something fun to drive, right? How about this boomer?  Today, when we arrived home from the top of the world, this Van Replacement is what we found parked in front of our house.
On our way home from Grand Lake, we drove over Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. This is the highest continuous paved road in America.  It weaves through some stunningly beautiful scenery, past glaciers, alpine meadows studded with Elk, snow-capped peaks and mountain lakes, as it crosses the Continental Divide.

BTW – we highly recommend Shadowcliff Lodge. For us boomers, it was Great! Grand Lake is a fun little tourist town. We enjoyed the lake cruise and the hikes in Rocky Mountain National Forest. We hoped to see a moose or two and even went out for an evening stroll to the meadow and got soaked to the skin by a passing thunderstorm. But alas, the moose must have been hiding in the forest when we stolled by.

At the Top

Grand Lake from our Room

Grand Lake from our Room

Well, Ok, we aren’t quite at the top of the world – only at 8400 feet. We are staying at the Shadowcliff Inn, overlooking the Village of Grand Lake and Grand Lake itself. The view is fantastic. We’ve had a boomerific day – starting off with finding an auto shop to look at our van which was making rasping noises as we drove here yesterday. Having found a place by phone, I went out to our mini-van to drive 16 miles to the shop in Granby – only to discover that we had a totally flat tire. Boomer bummer. Luckily, because we brought our bikes along, I also had thrown in the mini air compressor that runs off the cigarette lighter. 20 minutes later, the tire was inflated and I drove off to Granby. Noise was a bearing in the AC compressor and the shop simply removed the drive belt from the AC. No more noise — and no more AC. Oh well, better than a breakdown somewhere. Off to another shop and 20 minutes later, the flat was repaired. So, not bad, only 2 1/2 hours taken out of the day.
Don’t you love the view?

100 Quilts

The African Queen

The African Queen

Gentle Reader commented:  “We’ve heard about these quilts a few times now. Who are they going to when they’re done? We need some photos too!”

The Church’s Humanitarian department put out a call for quilts to Stakes in our area.  They provide the funds, we purchase the materials and assemble the quilts.  The finished quilts are returned to our local LDS cannery and go from there to Humanitarian Services which sends them to places that have suffered disasters:  hurricanes, earthquakes, floods…..

Our Stake President volunteered each Ward in our Stake to make 100 quilts.  We have 3 months to accomplish the task.  We are making 67 twin quilts (all are completed as of last Saturday) and 33 full quilts.  We have until Sept. 24 to finish up the full sized ones.

Here is a picture of one of the quilts.  Our Ward is making them all different.  The woman modeling the quilt has been the chief purchasing agent for our Ward’s effort.  To see what other items Humanitarian Services is in need of, go to: How Can I Help?

It’s B-A-C-K! (The Rain)

The rain that is.  It has rained most of the day.  I feel like I’m back in Oregon.  Overcast, gray skies and light ongoing rain.  A high in the 60′s today.  After a long dry hot summer, it’s great to finally be getting some rain.

Tomorrow is Quilt Day.  Our ward is having a quilting marathon from 9am – 9pm.  We have 50 of our 100 humanitarian quilts completed and should have 17 more mostly completed by the end of tomorrow.  That will take care of the 67 twin size.  Then it’s on to the 33 Full size ones that have to be completed by Sept 24.
